Be a Gentle Huckleberry

Huckleberries are members of the same family of fruits/berries as the blueberry. Huckleberries grow wild in many places around the world but it seems that only the huckleberries growing wild in the high altitudes of heavily acidic volcanic mountain lands are worth a damn. You can only get those huckleberries from the northwestern United States and some parts of western Canada.

To heap cruelty upon misery, most people don't even know what huckleberries are. About the most famous sources of huckleberry knowledge are the old Huckleberry Hound cartoons and Val Kilmer's famous line from "Tombstone" ("I'm your huckleberry.").

Northwestern Huckleberries are smaller and sweeter than blueberries. They are also richer in antioxidants. And maybe they help in other ways too. People go out into the wild and pick these huckleberries, sometimes braving intrusions from bears.

The huckleberry cottage industry is hardly known outside its native region but once you get up into the northwest you can find many stores that sell local huckleberry products, especially the state stores that sell locally-made or licensed products to tourists.

There is a little roadside restaurant in northern Idaho that makes one of the best huckleberry pies I have ever tasted. You can buy huckleberry pie filling on the Internet but if you don't know how traditional huckleberry pies are made yours made not taste as good.

The rule of thumb is that you can take just about any blueberry recipe and use it with northwestern huckleberries instead. I wish I could cook. I would buy me a few five-gallon cans of northwestern huckleberries every year and eat my fill of pies and pancakes.
