Good Food: A Personal Perspective.

A Little Taste of Coffee

Whatever happened to good, old-fashioned black coffee? Or coffee with cream? Today we have Mocha, Affogato, latte, melange, cappucino, cortado, decaf -- it's enough to drive an old coffee drinker sober. Coffee sobriety is real. People get so disgusted with all these fancy, funky coffees they just give up on drinking coffee at all. It's sad.

Coffee is one of the few stimulants that is used widely around the world. It is also a very powerful stimulant. I am surprised no one ever went after Lance Armstrong for drinking too much coffee and tea. Okay, maybe they did. I cannot keep up with all that anti-doping drama.

Coffee has become such a commonplace part of our lives that we now find many companies bring in workplace coffee vending machines as employee perks. I remember when we had to have coffee to keep us going all night. Now we have to have coffee just to show up to work? Am I the only person who thinks that is funny?

I have spent more than my fair share of dollars on Peet's Coffee and Tea, Starbucks, and even Dunkin' Donuts coffee. I guess I am a hypocrite but I sometimes miss the old days when I could sit down in a diner, have the waitress pour me a cup of black coffee, and all she would ask was, "Do you want cream with that, hon?"

Now I have to remember more coffee names and styles than I have had girlfriends to share them with. I keep a little black book just so I can refresh my memory on the right coffee or tea to order at which restaurant. People sometimes laugh at me for doing that but I usually get compliments on the coffees and teas I do order. Why? Because I have tried so many bad coffees and teas I had to make notes to warn myself not to order them again.

There is nothing quite like sitting down to a good cup of coffee in the morning. I just wish I could return to the simpler times when no one cared what the coffee was because nearly all coffees were made the same way. You created your own special blends of coffee by deciding whether to add cream, sugar, or just the right amount of donut and coffee cake. Now all the fun has been taken out of the process.
